NEWS: Why Haunts Are Weaving Food Into The Story

Last week I attended IAAPA Honors, and my biggest takeaway was something I saw last year: F&B as narrative. From LA Haunted Hayride's Cider Mill to Scarehouse Windsor's dinner experiences, the expansion of food carts at HHN, and all the haunts with hidden bars, we're seeing more haunts weaving food into the story. Guests are buying experiences from us, and food has to be part of that, not separate from it. Also this week: United Parks posted a rough Q1 while peer parks grew, and the next Sphere is heading to Yas Island.In this issue:

00:00:07.480 --> 00:00:10.279
Coming up your weekly roundup of news from around the
2
00:00:10.320 --> 00:00:17.440
haunt industry. Welcome to the show. I'm Philip on the
3
00:00:17.640 --> 00:00:21.239
HN Show. We bring you the haunt news, information, and
4
00:00:21.399 --> 00:00:24.839
education you need to prepare for Halloween. On Tuesdays, we
5
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:28.359
bring you a roundup of news from haunts worldwide. Read
6
00:00:28.399 --> 00:00:30.679
more about these stories and so much more in our
7
00:00:30.719 --> 00:00:34.280
free weekly newsletter. Subscribe at the link in the show notes,
8
00:00:34.600 --> 00:00:37.039
and as always for the news roundup, I'm passing it
9
00:00:37.079 --> 00:00:37.719
off to Darryl.
10
00:00:38.280 --> 00:00:41.679
A brief recap from Philip Pernandez, publisher of the Haunted
11
00:00:41.719 --> 00:00:45.240
Attraction Network. After the halfway to Halloween announcements. We had
12
00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:48.520
another slow news week, though we continue to see plenty
13
00:00:48.560 --> 00:00:51.039
from the theme park side that could hint at what fall
14
00:00:51.119 --> 00:00:54.920
will bring. United Parks Q one twenty twenty six earnings
15
00:00:54.920 --> 00:00:58.320
continue to trend we've seen for several quarters. Attendance and
16
00:00:58.399 --> 00:01:02.359
revenue were down. Leadership blamed the weather and then proceeded
17
00:01:02.359 --> 00:01:06.439
to buy back more stock. United Parks continues to underperform
18
00:01:06.519 --> 00:01:10.640
Six Flags, Disney and Universal, despite existing in many of
19
00:01:10.680 --> 00:01:14.879
the same markets. Six Flags, meanwhile, continues to double down
20
00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:17.840
on live entertainment for the fall and winter to entice
21
00:01:17.879 --> 00:01:21.400
annual pass holders to visit more often. Abu Dhabi is
22
00:01:21.439 --> 00:01:25.079
reinforcing its commitment to tourism with the announcement that the
23
00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:28.640
next Sphere will be built on Yas Island, opening in
24
00:01:28.680 --> 00:01:31.120
twenty twenty nine at a cost of one point seven
25
00:01:31.239 --> 00:01:36.040
billion dollars. The venue will see twenty thousand guests. Last week,
26
00:01:36.079 --> 00:01:39.280
I attended AAPPA Honors, and my biggest takeaway was something
27
00:01:39.319 --> 00:01:42.719
I saw last year. F and B as narrative, from
28
00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:47.599
La Haunted Hayride's cider Mill to Scarehouse Windsor's dinner experiences,
29
00:01:47.920 --> 00:01:50.400
and from all the haunts with hidden bars to those
30
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:53.959
experimenting with the concept. We're seeing more haunts explore it.
31
00:01:54.200 --> 00:01:56.959
I expect to see more haunts weaving food into the
32
00:01:57.040 --> 00:02:00.319
narrative of the simple reason that it works. Guests buying
33
00:02:00.359 --> 00:02:02.879
experiences from us, and food has to be part of
34
00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:07.000
that experience, not separate from it. Also this week, Dairy
35
00:02:07.159 --> 00:02:11.159
Halloween restructures its annual program after the closure of its
36
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:15.840
longtime carnival partner. The Midwest Hunters Convention released its initial
37
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:19.360
exhibitor or list of nearly one hundred venders and Haunters
38
00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:23.120
toolboxes hosting a session on legal pitfalls in haunt hiring.
39
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:27.199
Here's what you need to know this week. United Parks
40
00:02:27.240 --> 00:02:30.840
dismal Q one. United Parks and Resorts reported Q one
41
00:02:30.960 --> 00:02:35.039
twenty twenty six results, with attendance down five percent to
42
00:02:35.159 --> 00:02:39.039
three point two million guests, revenue down three percent to
43
00:02:39.080 --> 00:02:41.919
two hundred and seventy eight point three million, and net
44
00:02:41.919 --> 00:02:45.400
loss widening to thirty four point one million from sixteen
45
00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:48.840
point one million in Q one twenty twenty five. CEO
46
00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:53.759
Mark Swanson attributed the shortfall to unfavorable weather in San Diego, Florida,
47
00:02:53.800 --> 00:02:56.439
and Texas during the peak periods, as well as a
48
00:02:56.479 --> 00:03:00.439
decline in international visitation. The company repurch which is two
49
00:03:00.479 --> 00:03:03.800
point six million shares for approximately ninety two point seven
50
00:03:03.840 --> 00:03:06.639
million dollars in Q one and another one point eight
51
00:03:06.680 --> 00:03:10.199
million shares for approximately sixty four point eight million dollars
52
00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:13.439
through May eighth. Pure parks in the same calendar quarter
53
00:03:13.560 --> 00:03:17.840
showed very different results. Six Flags attendance grew four percent
54
00:03:17.879 --> 00:03:21.919
and revenue twelve percent. Universal's theme park revenue grew twenty
55
00:03:21.960 --> 00:03:25.759
four percent, and Disney's domestic per cap was up five percent,
56
00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:29.039
with experiences hitting Q two records. Follow the links in
57
00:03:29.080 --> 00:03:31.000
our show Notes to find out about all of this,
58
00:03:31.400 --> 00:03:34.680
and listen on this week's green tagged as we discuss
59
00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:37.800
all of the earning. The next Sphere is going to
60
00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:42.080
Yas Island. Myrol and Sphere Entertainment Company confirmed that the
61
00:03:42.120 --> 00:03:45.319
next International Sphere will be built in Abu Dhabi. The
62
00:03:45.400 --> 00:03:48.560
one point seven billion dollars twenty thousand seat venue will
63
00:03:48.599 --> 00:03:51.919
be located on Yas Island between SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and
64
00:03:52.039 --> 00:03:55.360
Yas Mall, with construction targeted for completion by the end
65
00:03:55.360 --> 00:03:57.840
of twenty twenty nine. Of course, this comes at a
66
00:03:57.840 --> 00:04:00.719
time when many of the industry is questioning whether Appadawi's
67
00:04:00.719 --> 00:04:04.360
ambitions will be delayed due to the Iranian War. Strategically,
68
00:04:04.680 --> 00:04:07.159
it seems to be a perfect fit cluster the venue
69
00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:10.159
with everything else that already draws people in, so the
70
00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:13.639
underwriting isn't betting on the building alone. Whether the Sphere
71
00:04:13.680 --> 00:04:17.519
format ports without the Vegas residency economics is a real question,
72
00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:21.879
but the CN Travelerme write up reads like myral is
73
00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:25.360
treating it as a flagship attraction, not a concert venue
74
00:04:25.439 --> 00:04:29.399
with a hospitality side pitch. Dairy Helloween is to adopt
75
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:33.879
a new partner led approach as Northwest Carnival Initiative announces
76
00:04:33.879 --> 00:04:38.120
closure Dairy Helloween from London. Dairy UK will adopt a
77
00:04:38.160 --> 00:04:41.959
new approach to their annual Halloween festivities after longtime partner
78
00:04:42.360 --> 00:04:46.639
Northwest Carnival Initiative and WCI has announced that it will
79
00:04:46.680 --> 00:04:49.879
be unable to fulfill its current service level agreement. In
80
00:04:49.920 --> 00:04:54.160
a statement, the NWCI cited several issues that factored into
81
00:04:54.199 --> 00:04:58.040
their decision, including the withdrawal of intellectual property consent for
82
00:04:58.120 --> 00:05:01.120
props and costumes, the scale, ail and complexity of the
83
00:05:01.160 --> 00:05:04.959
event's upcoming fortieth anniversary program, and the significant lead in
84
00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:08.279
time required for delivery. With the termination of the service
85
00:05:08.360 --> 00:05:13.319
level agreement, the NWCI will enter administration and cease operations.
86
00:05:13.519 --> 00:05:17.319
Dairy Halloween is reallocated eighty nine thousand pounds of the
87
00:05:17.360 --> 00:05:22.279
budget towards contingency plans focusing on local partnerships. According to
88
00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:25.920
a Dairy City and STRABA and District Council spokesperson, the
89
00:05:25.959 --> 00:05:28.720
new partnership led approach will see the appointment of a
90
00:05:28.759 --> 00:05:32.240
parade artistic director who will be responsible for leading the
91
00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:36.000
overall creative direction, the development of the theme and visuals,
92
00:05:36.319 --> 00:05:39.680
and the coordination of partners and community participation as well
93
00:05:39.720 --> 00:05:43.240
as overseeing the production. This new approach will allow Council
94
00:05:43.319 --> 00:05:48.000
to invest in local artists, cultural organizations, and suppliers, ensuring
95
00:05:48.040 --> 00:05:51.240
that it will benefit the local economy and cultural providers
96
00:05:51.240 --> 00:05:54.279
to deliver a very high quality event. A first look
97
00:05:54.279 --> 00:05:58.439
