An interview with Jon Braver on this year's delusion, open select nights through November 19th, 2023. Since 2011, guests have played their part in the world's most visceral, captivating, and unique live experience. A living, breathing world of fantastical horror where stories come to vivid life, and guests become integral actors in the unfolding narrative. Yet this tapestry of terror is more than shows. With Nocturnes & Nightmares, we learn there is more to the Delusion saga than meets the eye. A mysterious figure known only as The Author has penned every Delusion story since its inception. Bringing words to life. Ink to reality. It is more a curse than a gift, as The Author plays with fire. Devoted fans (our guests) will be swallowed into various stories and connect with characters both dire and beloved as they track down the mysterious author behind the Delusion series and learn of a disturbing agenda.
1
00:00:08.519 --> 00:00:13.560
Delusion, Nocturns and Nightmares has been
extended through November nineteenth. We'll hear all
2
00:00:13.560 --> 00:00:21.079
about it. That's coming up on
today's show from the Haunted Attraction Network.
3
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:24.320
I'm Philip and this is our sixty

And remember, the best way you can
8
00:00:42.399 --> 00:00:46.759
support us as Halloween season is by
sharing our Hauntathon with someone you think we'll
9
00:00:46.840 --> 00:00:50.759
enjoy it. Today, we're sitting
down with John Braver, the creator of
10
00:00:50.799 --> 00:00:55.280
Delusion, to learn more about this
year's show, and Manny from our team
11
00:00:55.479 --> 00:00:59.359
has the interview without further ado.
Here's Mammy and John. Hi. I'm
12
00:00:59.439 --> 00:01:03.319
John Brave, the creator of Delusion. Delusion Noctrines and Nightmares is a culmination
13
00:01:03.640 --> 00:01:08.599
of all the previous stories brought into
this one through line, this one narrative
14
00:01:08.920 --> 00:01:12.040
where the author of the Delusion series
is missing and all of her stories have
15
00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:18.079
come to life and you've got to
track her down and uncover their dark agenda.
16
00:01:18.319 --> 00:01:22.959
It's an interactive play where you play
your part in a story. It's
17
00:01:23.079 --> 00:01:26.280
very narrative driven, with professional actors
and stunt people and sound design. It's
18
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:33.200
like you're inside of a movie.
How do you think about something new every
19
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:37.799
single year? What is that process? Like? I'm like a delusion fan
20
00:01:37.920 --> 00:01:41.120
anyway. I think about myself as
what are some new things I'd like to
21
00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:45.000
see? What's a new way to
experience the same type of venue? Because
22
00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.159
we've been at this venue for three
years, but it still feels very new,
23
00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:52.959
and I think people have been here
for the last two years will still
24
00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:57.120
feel lost in this world. But
in terms of coming up with new ideas,
25
00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:00.000
I just say there's plenty of them, but they don't always fit in
26
00:02:00.040 --> 00:02:05.560
a story. To me, it's
everything revolves around the story. It's very
27
00:02:05.680 --> 00:02:08.240
narrative driven and it has to make
sense, even though a lot of it
28
00:02:08.360 --> 00:02:13.599
sometimes doesn't make sense to be honestly, even as I'm writing it. But
29
00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:19.199
the ideas come from especially the last
three years, have come from this esther
30
00:02:19.319 --> 00:02:22.840
Phillips character, from this mansion.
So this is the one hundred and forty
31
00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:25.759
year old mansion. Esther and Louis
Phillips lived here, and I wanted to
32
00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:30.360
take their just their names and build
a whole new story around them. So
33
00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:32.840
it starts off with the logistics of
how you're going to move a group through
34
00:02:34.439 --> 00:02:38.759
a story, and then I have
a book of stories that I'd like to
35
00:02:38.840 --> 00:02:40.879
pull from, and sometimes they fit
in certain years and sometimes they don't.
36
00:02:42.360 --> 00:02:45.599
I have a bunch of ideas,
but they just they have to work,
37
00:02:45.639 --> 00:02:49.360
they have to fit, and the
ideas come from wherever. They come from,
38
00:02:50.039 --> 00:02:53.960
dreams, they come from video games. It was one of my favorite
39
00:02:53.960 --> 00:02:57.840
games. It's called Little Nightmares,
which is incredible, and that was a
40
00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:00.840
big inspiration for some of the things, like the tall l in this story.
41
00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:05.439
So I'll like get ideas from that
and then just things will just come
42
00:03:05.439 --> 00:03:07.759
to me at random moments. But
it has to be a cohesive story.
43
00:03:07.800 --> 00:03:10.960
So I think the idea of especially
for this year, the idea of an
44
00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:17.560
author creating all the delusion stories was
super cool to me. It was very
45
00:03:19.080 --> 00:03:23.199
meta, and it was the idea
that, like I have, it's painful
46
00:03:23.240 --> 00:03:25.879
to write these things, and so
for her, the idea was that it's
47
00:03:25.919 --> 00:03:30.520
painful. It's not only painful for
her to write these stories, but it's
48
00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:34.639
such a curse that it just drives
her completely mad. And then I try
49
00:03:34.680 --> 00:03:38.759
to think of what's a way to
give more an emotional tug to the story.
50
00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:42.319
So the idea of her writing these
entire series just to get her daughter
51
00:03:42.400 --> 00:03:46.400
back to life was a really gripping, gripping tale. So is a dark
52
00:03:46.479 --> 00:03:52.840
story, which is the world that
I live in anyway, But it's super
53
00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:55.319
fun. It's just but there are
stories come from the ideas, come from
54
00:03:55.360 --> 00:04:00.879
anywhere. But there is a foundational
through line for all the Delusion stories,
55
00:04:00.919 --> 00:04:05.000
and it culminated with this one.
And in that same vein talking about all
56
00:04:05.039 --> 00:04:11.680
these different stories, when you're making
the decisions on what to pick and choose
57
00:04:11.759 --> 00:04:15.199
from the various years that went into
this, when sane culmination, what is
58
00:04:15.240 --> 00:04:18.480
the mindset? Is it more what
it's the most practical? What do you
59
00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:21.600
think is just the most badass?
Or what got the most fan reaction?
60
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:29.879
Yeah, those three the fan reactions. I don't I'm I'd make sure that,
61
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.600
Like when it comes to something like
stunts, we don't do anything for
62
00:04:32.720 --> 00:04:35.519
shock value. It's more does it
fit, is it practical, does it
63
00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:40.240
serve the story properly? So I'll
have a list of things from all the
64
00:04:40.279 --> 00:04:45.480
past and gags from all the past, and storylines and characters, and then
65
00:04:45.519 --> 00:04:48.199
I just pull them into this thread. It's a tapestry of story that is
66
00:04:48.319 --> 00:04:54.680
just I can pull them into a
single thread that carries through and what fits.
67
00:04:54.879 --> 00:04:57.639
But it has to also be engaging
and exciting. So for example,
68
00:04:58.560 --> 00:05:00.399
I don't I cannot spoil it,
but we did something this year we've never
69
00:05:00.439 --> 00:05:06.319
done before with a group and it
turned out to be a pretty badass experience.
70
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:10.759
To your point, it's what's a
badass moment? Action sequences? Right?
71
00:05:11.079 --> 00:05:14.480
Every year we do action sequences,
and this year opens up with a
72
00:05:14.519 --> 00:05:19.120
big action sequence. So can you
say anything along the lines of the VIP
73
00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:24.959
experience. As a VIP guest,
you get to actually take this step further
74
00:05:25.079 --> 00:05:29.399
with play your parts and you get
to play a zombie and an actual sequence
75
00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:33.240
of the show where you get to
scare other guests. And so I know
76
00:05:33.279 --> 00:05:39.040
we talked about it briefly, but
can you talk about one what's next for
77
00:05:39.160 --> 00:05:43.040
you? And then two what's next
for Delusion? I think Delusion will always
78
00:05:43.079 --> 00:05:46.639
be with me. They are slightly
different paths, but delusion is always a
79
00:05:46.680 --> 00:05:49.319
part of me. So for me
personally, I need to start taking all
80
00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:55.040
these characters, these over fifty characters
and nine stories, and start pulling them
81
00:05:55.040 --> 00:06:00.439
into the film the world because I
have a daughter's fourteen now for me,
82
00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:02.480
is about legacy stuff, and these
shows are great and she can come and
83
00:06:02.519 --> 00:06:06.240
see them, but they don't once
they're done, and so I need to
84
00:06:06.279 --> 00:06:11.759
start making the films and making the
TV series based on these She and all
85
00:06:11.800 --> 00:06:15.000
the rest of the Braver family can
go back in and see their dad's work.
86
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:17.560
So that's a big part of it
for me. But delusion has a
87
00:06:17.720 --> 00:06:21.079
special place in a lot of people's
hearts, and I don't want to end
88
00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:25.040
that. The idea of bringing back
some of the old shows would be a
89
00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:28.759
wonderful option as well too. I
don't want it to end, but I
90
00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:31.040
feel like we've if it did.
This is a nice sort of wrap up
91
00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:34.879
to that and allows me to focus
on the film properties. Yeah, you
92
00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:39.959
mentioned legacy, and I thought that's
interesting. How much would you say that
93
00:06:40.040 --> 00:06:44.519
you act with the mentality that you
would love to leave a lasting legacy,
94
00:06:44.639 --> 00:06:47.800
Like how important is that in every
decision you've been making, especially with the
95
00:06:47.800 --> 00:06:55.079
show, it's becoming more and more
important. Mortality sets in for me,
96
00:06:55.399 --> 00:07:00.439
like after my mom died in twenty
fifteen, everything after that was about mortality.
97
00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:04.959
It was like everything's finite and it
can end at any moment. And
98
00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:09.600
I'm proud of what we've done with
Delusion and the fact that we actually have
99
00:07:09.879 --> 00:07:15.160
really exceptional fans of the show,
people who care very much about it.
100
00:07:15.240 --> 00:07:18.439
I think that in itself is a
wonderful legacy. But it still needs to
101
00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:23.680
be recorded on film. I still
feel we need to go back. You
102
00:07:23.720 --> 00:07:27.040
can go back and look at this
trailer for this stuff's actually go back and
103
00:07:27.079 --> 00:07:30.160
see a story, a complete story, whether it be again, maybe it's
104
00:07:30.199 --> 00:07:32.120
film, maybe it's a novel.
There's a lot of options to go,
105
00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:40.600
but something physical and sustainable and revisitable. Is that a word? Yeah,
106
00:07:40.680 --> 00:07:43.399
Sure, we're making worries, John, you made delusion. It don't matter.
107
00:07:44.279 --> 00:07:46.920
We're delusional here, right exactly,
that's right, that's right. So
108
00:07:47.519 --> 00:07:51.839
you've been doing this for so long
and you do want to pivot if you
109
00:07:51.920 --> 00:07:57.120
were to take a step back from
Delusion, like a much bigger step than
110
00:07:57.160 --> 00:08:00.120
your thinking to say, the films
do super well and you don't even have
111
00:08:00.120 --> 00:08:03.600
time to think about this. What
would you like to see happen to delusion?
112
00:08:03.639 --> 00:08:07.879
I think if you can, you
can make this a financially viable thing.
113
00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:13.360
Even though it's okay, it's still
with the low numbers, it's still
114
00:08:13.399 --> 00:08:16.920
hard to sustain it. I would
like to see it. I would like
115
00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:18.920
to see it. I like to
see people have the opportunity to live in
116
00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:22.560
these stories every year. I would
like that to continue. And maybe it
117
00:08:22.600 --> 00:08:28.000
continues with again maybe it's maybe it's
me, but probably not. Maybe it's
118
00:08:28.040 --> 00:08:33.279
my assistant director Victor, who's the
GM of Haunted a Ride now like he's
119
00:08:33.320 --> 00:08:35.960
and he does all the sound design
for this, but he's the one that
120
00:08:35.039 --> 00:08:37.879
knows he shows best. So if
there was somebody to pass us on to
121
00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:43.279
would be him. It's time to
pass that on. And either it's the
122
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:48.440
old shows or it's something new within
under the delusion banner, then I would
123
00:08:48.440 --> 00:08:50.799
be totally down for that kind of
stuff. Just as long as I think
124
00:08:50.799 --> 00:08:58.080
it's really important that these experiences remain
and that people can actually connect and put
125
00:08:58.120 --> 00:09:01.440
their phones away and have a tangible
experience. It's super important. I think
126
00:09:01.480 --> 00:09:05.039
these are more these live experiences,
especially post pandemic is like more important than
127
00:09:05.080 --> 00:09:09.519
ever. Yeah, so it's a
bit of a mission statement to keep it
128
00:09:09.559 --> 00:09:13.840
going. But both in the live
and the filmed realm is we can do
129
00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:16.960
both. Yeah, I think that's
just gonna happen. Yeah, going back
130
00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:20.360
to the fact that you have someone
currently running hay Ride, You've been working
131
00:09:20.360 --> 00:09:24.600
with Thirteenth Floor for a while,
but you've during your tenure, you've had
132
00:09:24.799 --> 00:09:26.480
I still can't believe Patrick Neil Patrick
Harris is a part of this at one
133
00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:31.399
point, right, But how has
overall that journey treated you? What has
134
00:09:31.440 --> 00:09:35.559
been I guess those check mark moments
where you felt like, Okay, this
135
00:09:35.639 --> 00:09:37.639
is the next step. Now,
this is the next step. Now this
136
00:09:37.720 --> 00:09:41.639
is the next step. Yeah,
that's a good question. I think it's
137
00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:48.080
the I've always I've wanted to make
next steps into, as I said,
138
00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:52.080
the more film properties. But it's
delusion is such a beast of a show
139
00:09:52.279 --> 00:09:56.399
that it occupies so much time that
it takes a lot of my focus away.
140
00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:00.480
So I see the next step,
but then they get wrapped into the
141
00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:03.960
world of creating the live shows that
I lose time to do the other things.
142
00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:09.120
So I think, and to be
totally honest, like that. The
143
00:10:09.159 --> 00:10:16.000
next steps have been delayed because of
the live show. Wo they need to
144
00:10:16.399 --> 00:10:20.000
That's why I need to step back. But that's why I joined thirteenth Floor.
145
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:24.159
I'm my title is director of Immersive
Entertainment. It's not creative delusion.
146
00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:30.879
It's so the idea is to let's
we can continue this and let's do this.
147
00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:33.720
But just like I have a guy
on a friend of mine at Netflix
148
00:10:33.879 --> 00:10:37.600
who does live experiences and he oversees
it. He's not writing them. I
149
00:10:37.639 --> 00:10:41.240
need to be in that position when
I'm just like overseeing it. All right,
150
00:10:41.320 --> 00:10:43.080
Victor, you got delusion? Cool, all right, let's do a
151
00:10:43.120 --> 00:10:46.879
show in Chicago. All right,
somebody else, you go and run it.
152
00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:50.799
Let's run his Crimson Queen. Let's
find a place over there and let's
153
00:10:50.840 --> 00:10:52.279
run it over there. Meanwhile,
I'm gonna go shoot the movie of this.
154
00:10:52.799 --> 00:10:56.879
So there's multiple things need to happen. We haven't been able to do
155
00:10:56.919 --> 00:11:01.519
that because this is because I'm so
heavily involved this. Yeah, so next
156
00:11:01.519 --> 00:11:05.039
steps have been delayed. But at
the same time, it's I'm not I'm
157
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:07.559
not regrets over it. It's just
there's a time for everything, and the
158
00:11:07.639 --> 00:11:13.039
time has come to make to just
force myself into that next now. Today's
159
00:11:13.039 --> 00:11:18.720
episode was produced and edited by me
Philip Hernandez, with post production by David
160
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:22.559

Thomas. We're counting down to Halloween with
